SWRA Master Plan Outline

City Council received a presentation from the Parks & Recreation Director Kevin Huntzinger, and representatives from Melton Design Group on the proposed master plan for the Sunrise Whitney Recreation Area (SWRA). The 184-acre unused land, formally the Rocklin Golf Club, was purchased by the City in 2018. On April 26, 2022, City Council approved the master plan contract with Melton Design Group for SWRA in order to ensure the area is developed appropriately.

Community Shows Enthusiasm for SWRA Master Plan Concepts
Approx. 175 People Attended Sept. 12 Meeting

The City of Rocklin held a public meeting to share initial ideas and proposed amenities for the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area master plan on Monday, Sept. 12 at the Rocklin Event Center.

The evening featured a formal presentation outlining the current iteration of plans along the main corridors of the SWRA, including a central area for activities currently labeled “The Hub,” a new park space near Sunset Blvd. on the west side of the SWRA, and more passive recreation proposed on the east side.

Grant Funding Approved for Potential SWRA Trails Expansion

Rocklin residents who enjoy walking, running or riding through the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area (SWRA) are one step closer to exploring another 0.75 miles of pathways after City Council approved $472,500 in funding for park improvements on Tuesday night.

$428,000 is available through state grants focused on recreation, with the city required to match $44,500. City Council approved resolutions to secure the grant monies and expressed the desire to fund Phase I of the East Trails expansion at SWRA once received.

Abatement on Sunset Whitney Recreation Area Structures Nearly Complete

The Sunset Whitney Recreation Area (SWRA) has become a popular place for Rocklin residents to enjoy the outdoors since the opening of the West Trails in the fall of 2019.

The trails provide a great resource for people looking to walk, bike or just get a little fresh air during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Second Annual Sunset Run Promises Fun

The second annual Sunset Run 5K fundraiser will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, from 4-10 p.m. at the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area (SWRA). The evening includes a run/walk at 5 p.m. and activities before and after, such as food vendors, lawn games, a DJ, and a free showing of Toy Story 4 under the stars at 6:30 p.m.

West Trails at Sunset Whitney Rec Area Now Open

More than 150 Rocklin residents kicked off their Labor Day weekend on Aug. 30 by being part of the first group to officially walk the newly opened West Trails at the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area.

The West Trails offer 2.7 miles of paths, ranging from the parking lot and main trail access at 4201 Midas Avenue to secondary trail access points at Whitney Blvd. and at Sunset Blvd.

The special opening ceremony included remarks from Rocklin City leaders and volunteers, a ribbon cutting and the inaugural walk.

Helping Hands SWRA Beautification Project

On April 21st, over 200 local youth arrived bright and early wielding shovels, rakes and smiles – ready to plant over 120 trees, 200 plants and paint 2 restroom facilities. The trees planted serve to replace those dead/hazardous trees which have been removed over the past several months.
