Sunset Whitney Recreation Area
This page provides a visual and chronological overview of the
City’s progress at SWRA since acquiring the site in 2017. From
major safety and infrastructure upgrades to upcoming construction
plans, each milestone is paired with suggested photos to help
tell the story of how the site is transforming into a vibrant
community space. Visitors can explore the timeline to see how far
we’ve come and what’s next for “The Hub” at SWRA.
2017 – City acquires the property.
- Initiated improvements to enhance safety and prepare for future construction.
2018 – Essential groundwork begins.
- Removed 200+ dead trees, improving visibility and safety.
- Backfilled sand traps and rebuilt the Whitney Blvd. rail-tie bridge.
- Installed a new 2,000-foot mainline for Midas turf and pathway trees.
2019 – Infrastructure and accessibility enhancements.
- Landscaped parking lot islands and extended lighting.
- Installed three informational kiosks near parking lots and Sunset Blvd.
- Added split-rail fencing around the parking lot for a more natural aesthetic.
2022 – Structural improvements.
- Rebuilt the final two rail-tie bridges near the old clubhouse and Argonaut undercrossing.
- Installed four additional informational kiosks at Argonaut entrances.
- Thanks to Prop 68, a CA State Grant, we were able to complete and open the East Trails.
2023 – Site preparation and safety upgrades.
- Demolished unsafe structures on-site.
- Re-graded and added drainage to newly paved pathways for better accessibility.
2024 – Fencing upgrades and community engagement.
- Replaced chain-link fences with split-rail fencing at Whitney Blvd. entrances.
- Hosted a Community Workshop on September 18 for input on the Veteran’s Memorial area.
Upcoming Construction:
- Pickleball Courts & Veteran’s Memorial Area: Construction will begin as soon as construction documents and permits are finalized.
- Contractors are actively working on conceptual and construction documents.
- Park access will remain open during construction, with advance notice if closures are necessary.
