West Trails at Sunset Whitney Rec Area Open Aug. 30

News

The City of Rocklin invites the community to celebrate the opening of the West Trails at the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area on Friday, August 30, at 6 p.m. at 4201 Midas Ave.

The West Trails offer 2.7 miles of paths, ranging from the parking lot and main trail access at 4201 Midas Avenue to secondary trail access points at Whitney Blvd. and at Sunset Blvd.

Friday’s ceremony will include remarks from Rocklin City leaders and volunteers, to be followed by a ribbon cutting and the official opening of the West Trails to the public.

“Opening the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area West Trails to residents has been a priority of the Parks and Recreation Department since the land was purchased by the City,” said Sarah Novo, Parks and Recreation Manager. “It’s exciting to offer people the ability to explore the area at their leisure and we’re thankful to all the staff and community volunteers who have made this possible.”

After the ribbon cutting, people will be invited to walk the trails and enjoy a celebration in the main parking area, including a DJ, free hot dogs, and shaved ice offered for purchase by the Snowie King food truck.

Since the SWRA was purchased by the City in 2018, staff and volunteers have been hard at work to bring the area back up to standards for enjoyment. Volunteer opportunities have included the removal of an unsightly fence installed after the former golf closure and a beautification project where 120 trees and 200 plants were put in. There is still extensive work to be done.

For residents who like to be involved in future volunteer opportunities to improve trails across Rocklin, including in the SWRA, please visit the City’s “Trail Keepers” page at www.rocklin.ca.us/trail-keepers to learn more and sign up.
