Greg Roberson – Individual Honoree

When people think of community spirit in Rocklin, Greg Roberson often comes to mind. Known by many as “Mr. Rocklin,” Greg has become the face and driving force behind countless events and initiatives that bring the community together.

Greg’s impact is especially evident through his longstanding involvement with the Rocklin Area Chamber of Commerce, where he has served on the Board of Directors for nine years, including multiple terms as chairman. His leadership has helped shape beloved programs such as Leadership Rocklin, the Rocklin Tree Lighting, and Hot Chili, Cool Cars—events that not only foster community pride but also support the local economy and draw visitors from across the region.

Beyond economic development, Greg’s commitment to service extends deeply into philanthropy. He has been a dedicated participant in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation “Brave the Shave” campaign, helping raise thousands of dollars and awareness for childhood cancer research. He also volunteers with Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance, supporting families during some of their most difficult moments.

Greg’s contributions don’t stop there. As a founding volunteer of the Placer County Fair Rib Cook-Off, he has played a vital role in growing the event into a major attraction. From coordinating logistics and overseeing judging to dedicating long hours on event days, his efforts ensure the event’s continued success.

Whether serving meals with the Salvation Army, mentoring others, or championing local businesses, Greg consistently shows up for his community. His authenticity, enthusiasm, and unwavering dedication make him a true pillar of Rocklin.

David Tietz – Pioneer Honoree

For more than 12 years, David Tietz has quietly and consistently worked behind the scenes to improve safety throughout Rocklin. As a dedicated volunteer with the Rocklin Fire Department, David has taken on the critical task of ensuring fire hydrants are visible, accessible, and properly maintained.

To date, he has personally painted more than 300 fire hydrants across the city—an effort that directly supports faster emergency response times and helps protect homes, businesses, and lives. In addition, David works to keep wildfire access routes clear, helping firefighters safely and efficiently reach neighborhoods during high-risk situations.

David’s impact extends beyond the physical work. He carefully organizes projects, equips volunteers with tools and clear instructions, and fosters a sense of purpose among those who join him. His ability to engage others—especially younger volunteers—helps build a culture of service and awareness around public safety.

Remarkably, David continues this physically demanding work well into his 80s, demonstrating an inspiring level of commitment, resilience, and civic responsibility.

Susan Brooking – Pioneer Honoree

Since joining the Rocklin Historical Society in 2021, Susan Brooking has become an integral part of preserving and sharing the city’s rich history. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a deep commitment to storytelling, education, and community engagement.

Susan has contributed hundreds of volunteer hours, including more than 400 hours in 2025 alone. As chair of the Museum Committee, she has helped shape exhibits, lead tours, and bring history to life for visitors of all ages—especially local third-grade students who benefit from her engaging and educational approach.

Known affectionately as the “basement troll,” Susan leads tours of the museum’s granite mining exhibits and participates in live demonstrations that showcase Rocklin’s historic granite industry. Her passion, creativity, and willingness to step in wherever needed have made her an invaluable member of the Historical Society.

In addition to her work in Rocklin, Susan is active in regional historical and civic organizations, including the Placer County Historical Advisory Board. Her dedication ensures that Rocklin’s past remains a meaningful part of its future.

Samuel Wang – Youth Honoree

Samuel Wang represents the next generation of community leaders, demonstrating an impressive commitment to service, culture, and connection at a young age.

A student at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, Samuel has contributed to a wide range of community efforts over the years. His participation in multiple Earth Day creek clean-ups highlights his dedication to environmental stewardship, while his volunteer work as a summer school assistant supported both students and educators in meaningful ways.

Samuel also shares his musical talents by performing piano at a local retirement community, bringing joy and companionship to residents. In addition, he actively participates in cultural events, including dragon dance performances throughout the region, helping to promote cultural awareness and unity.

Through his service, Samuel has positively impacted residents of all ages—supporting youth development, enriching the lives of seniors, and strengthening community connections through cultural engagement.

RUFF Healing Heroes – Business/Organization Honoree

For more than 15 years, RUFF Healing Heroes has provided compassionate support to veterans, first responders, and individuals impacted by trauma. Founded in Rocklin, the organization is dedicated to fostering healing, connection, and resilience through community-based programs and outreach.

RUFF’s work focuses on improving mental, emotional, and social well-being by creating safe, supportive environments where individuals and families can find understanding and hope. Their efforts are powered by volunteers and strengthened through partnerships with local organizations and businesses.

At the heart of RUFF Healing Heroes is a legacy of service established by founders Victoria “Vicki” Curtis and her late husband, Hal Curtis. Vicki’s continued leadership and hands-on dedication have helped the organization grow and adapt to meet evolving community needs.

As the organization prepares for a leadership transition, its mission remains strong—rooted in empathy, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to those it serves.

Congratulations to all the 2026 Ruhkala Community Service Award recipients. Their stories reflect the very best of Rocklin—demonstrating that a strong community is built through service, compassion, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
